Description

Monarch Crest is an epic alpine trail that spends a significant amount of time above tree line. It offers gorgeous views of the surrounding mountains which are lush with vegetation: a distinct change from the front range of Colorado. This trail is quite popular with backpackers and mountain bikers, but it is great for a short day hike as well.<br />
CDT Description: Section 18 of the CDT in Colorado runs 10.7 miles from Marshall Pass to Monarch Pass and US Hwy 50. Along the way the trail passes Mount Ouray, Pahlone Peak, Mount Peck, and Monarch Ridge.<br />
The trailhead listed is for the northern end of this section. The southern end is located at lat= 38.39166 lon= -106.24696

Directions

From Salida, head west on US 50 to Poncha Springs. Head south on 285 for less than a quarter <br />of a mile and park one vehicle at the gas station/shuttle parking area (they charge $5 per <br />vehicle). Now head up US 50 west to the top of Monarch Pass and park in the parking area on <br />the left. The trail starts up the dirt road.
